NVIDIA has announced a GPU (card) that can do high-quality ray tracing in real time. However, be ready to break open the piggy bank, as the cost is expected to be around $60,000.

IBM Research has released its annual "5 in 5" list (5 technologies that will change the world drastically within the next 5 years). The usual suspects are on the list: cryptography, AI, and quantum computing. It will be interesting to look back on the list in 5 years to see how well they've done. Then again, right now we can look at the 5-in-5 list released in December 2012 to see how they did then.

Samsung announced the features of the new Galaxy S9 and S9+ today. It has some nice new camera features and some cute tricks (such as emojis personalized to your face). One feature that was rumored, but which is missing, is the ability to record and play 4K HDR video. I saw nothing that will make me trade in my Galaxy S8; I guess I'll wait for the Galaxy S10 or the iPhone 11.

Blayne Mayfield earned his PhD in Computer Science from the Missouri University of Science & Technology (formerly known as the University of Missouri–Rolla) in Rolla, Missouri in 1988.

Work history at OSU

Dr. Mayfield joined the Computer Science Faculty of OSU in 1988 and currently holds the rank of Associate Professor. During his tenure at OSU, he served seven years as Head of the Computer Science Department and four years as Director of the Institute for Teaching & Learning Excellence (ITLE).
