ChatGPT is an impressive chatbot from OpenAI that is causing a lot of excitement and concern. Can it really write poems, papers, programs, etc. Well, let me share an example: I am a model railroader and for that hobby I asked it to, "Write an Arduino program that simulates a flickering campfire using an LED attached to pin 9.” After two to three seconds, it gave me a program to do this (a program that looks to be correct) and followed it with a detailed explanation of how the program works. Fascinating, but troubling as well.

Blayne Mayfield earned his PhD in Computer Science from the Missouri University of Science & Technology (formerly known as the University of Missouri–Rolla) in Rolla, Missouri in 1988.

Work history at OSU

Dr. Mayfield joined the Computer Science Faculty of OSU in 1988 and currently serves as Interim Department Head and Professor. During his tenure at OSU, he served eight years as Head of the Department of Computer Science and four years as Director of the Institute for Teaching & Learning Excellence (ITLE).
